Mid-Appalachian Region of
the National Speleological Society


The Mid-Appalachian Region (MAR) of the National Speleological Society (NSS) is a regional organization of the NSS consisting of various grottos and organized caving clubs within the general geographic area, or region, of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey.   Official MAR Logo

The MAR, an internal organization of the NSS, is dedicated to the principles of the NSS, to promote fellowship among its members, and to advance the science of speleology.

The Mid-Appalachian Region of the NSS was officially established on October 10, 1953 at Shippensburg State Teachers College, currently known as Shippensburg University, in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.

It sponsors two regional field meets (Spring and Fall), and hosts its annual business meeting in the month of February. The region publishes a newsletter, the "MAR Breakdown", which is published three times a year and occasionally publishes county bulletins on Pennsylvania caves.



MAR NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS:      - December 2024

MAR OFFICER ELECTIONS     The online elections for the 2024 MAR Officer elections is now OPEN! Thank you to those who submitted a nomination(s). Online elections will remain open till 12:00 AM (Midnight) on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. Please take a few minutes to quickly cast your ballot and make your decision known. Those elected will determine their respecitve officer postion and will fullfill their 2025 officer term by running the 2025 MAR Business Meeting on Saturday, February 22, 2025. ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING     The 2025 MAR annual business meeting will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the Mt. Laurel Church of God (with optional Zoom call-in). The church is located at 1295 Piketown Road, intersection of Sleepy Hollow Road and the Appalachian Trail, and across the street from the West Hanover Fire Company in W. Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. As in the past, please plan on bringing a covered dish for the "Pot-luck" meal. For more information and directions, please see "Business Meetings". Please note that there will be the usual PCC Meeting following the MAR Businss meeting.
